amber teething necklaces | i swear by them

I’ve had lots of emails and questions and conversations lately about our amber teething necklaces for the boys, so I thought it might be time for another post about them.

I used to be incredibly skeptical about amber teething necklaces until we tried them for ourselves. Since I’ve now had lots of time to compare life before and after we started using them, I am even more convinced that they work.

It’s made me wonder… just why am I quick to reach for medicines made of synthetic materials developed in a lab by humans and yet discount natural remedies that have been tucked up into nature by God himself? I believe in God and I belive he’s pretty clever. So why wouldn’t I believe that he’s built into creation much of what we need to take care of ourselves?

Don’t get me wrong, God designed us to be very clever too, and I think man-made medicines are amazing and a gift for us. But where is the balance? Why can’t we use a combination of both?

I love the idea that I can help my family naturally… that maybe there are healthier and less invasive ways to ease discomfort and live well.

Enter amber teething necklaces – a huge help for our family that I’d recommend to anyone.

How amber teething necklaces work, as explained on the Hazelaid website:

Commonly known as “teething jewelry” in Europe, Baltic amber has been a natural remedy for pain relief for hundreds of years. It is not a “stone” but a natural resin. As it warms with the body’s temperature, amber releases oils containing succinic acid, a natural pain reliever, which are then readily absorbed into the skin and the bloodstream.

Baltic amber has some of the highest concentrations of succinic acid found in nature, and this is what makes it so special. Succinic acid is a natural component of plant and animal tissues, and its presence in the human body is beneficial in many ways. Amber is known to relieve headaches, teething pain, reduce inflammation of the throat, ear and stomach, and to fight infections and respiratory diseases as it improves the body’s immunity.

Natural amber beaded necklaces are a completely non-invasive remedy for rashes, upset tummies, earaches, fevers and colds. It is a natural analgesic that will help calm your child and is recognized by allopathic medicine specialists as antispasmodic and anti-fever. Many adults report improvement of arthritis discomfort and carpal tunnel pain in their hands when wearing amber jewelry.

Last year I wrote a comprehensive review of the necklaces if you’d like to read more: Amber teething necklaces: I’m a believer.

Levi just started wearing his amber teething necklace again. (I think we have some molar action!) We also put it on him when he’s sick, knowing that it can help ease headaches and ear aches as well.

I put Judah’s necklace on him as soon as he turned four months, hoping to pre-empt any teething pain before it becomes a drama.

The amber teething necklaces should last indefinitely as long as they are cared for correctly – taking care not to get them wet or get lotions, oils, or sunscreens on them.

If you’d like to give one a try, I recommend Hazelaid, a family-based business in Canada. They have a huge range of products, good prices (including affordable international shipping), and excellent customer service. I was so pleased with them that I’ve become an affiliate.

For 10% off your amber teething necklace (or any other product) from Hazelaid, use the code 10memos at checkout.

Hazelaid also offers hazelwood necklaces, which help for a number of things including eczema. I’ve not tried them but I have two friends who have in the last couple of months. Both said their little one’s eczema made significant improvements.

By the way, this is not a sponsored post. Just one mom to another, passing on a tip that’s served our family well.

Dear friends, have you tried amber teething necklaces? Have they worked for your little one? If you’ve tried other natural remedies with success, I’d love to hear about it in the comments.

I have lots of girlfriends that use them and I never have..thinking they looked silly and how could the little stones possibly work?! But I guess as time goes and I hear more and more about the benefits…I think they must to a degree. I swear by rubbing the gums since something is released and it seems to soothe. My son always fell asleep when I did this. Now I just wish I had tried a necklace to see if it was for us.

I still don’t know about the amber teething necklaces. Last year, friends gave us one (a legit one from a reputable store with certificate so I know I can’t blame our woes on ‘fakeness’) but I still am not sure if it’s worked for us. To be honest, Xave hasn’t cut teeth in months BUT he continues to exhibit all major teething behaviour and biting has become a bit of an issue. We spent all last week with fevers and in perfect misery and I even took him to the doctor to rule out ear infection. Doctor says, nope, just teething…grrr… However I don’t take it off thinking if its this bad with the necklace on, I don’t want to know if it might be worse with it off! But I do think its cute. I’m truly a hippie at heart!

oh, that sounds terrible! the biting might have to do with teething, but i think the littles also bite as they’re exploring their bodies and what they’re capable of. 😉 i’m sorry it’s so bad though. poor little guy – he must be perfectly miserable!! (and you too) boo! and yeah, you’re a total hippie. love it. 😀

hey. i just noticed in one of your photos that xave has a dark colored necklace. when i ordered mine, the lady told me that the lighter the color (and the “cloudier”) the more effective they are. do you have dark/clearish beads?? just another thought to consider!!

I have not tried these necklaces, but I want to try them with Annah. They seemed, at first, to be too good to be true. But I have only heard good things from moms who use them, so I definitely want to give them a try!

Thanks for explaining this. I really thought these necklaces were for chewing, and I couldn’t figure out why they were so tight on the neck in various bloggers’ pics. My baby is drooling up a storm and about to be 4 months, so I’ll probably be making this investment very quickly.

I’ve been fighting trying them for a while because of my own skepticism. Ok, ok, I give in. I’m going to that site right now because this teething thing is beating me down right now.

I would encourage to try it. Though be aware that there lots of fake amber from China nowadays. Check sellers for amber certificate!

Teething is such a tough time for our little guys. Having 6 children I have yet to see or use the Amber Teething Necklace. It has some pretty incredible feedback and I can see why copy cats would rise up and try to get some of th market share. I am a little leary about putting anything around my childs neck though…Although it is probably totally safe, I’m just paranoid like that. I guess it would be pretty hard for them to snag themselves on anything seeing that it is so small.

Yeah, I think that’s a great point. They really need to fit properly. I think when they are too loose it becomes more of a hazard. Sometimes I see little ones wearing long ones and I always feel like I want to chat with their moms… but also don’t want to interfere. Arg, it’s tough! But yes, they need to fit correctly!

Can children absorb too much of the succinic acid?

I have found several places where you can look up how to tell for yourself if it’s true baltic amber. There are several tests you can use, too many for me to list here.

But one of them is a UV light test, real amber will glow slightly blue. Another is the friction test.

Rub the specimen vigorously on a soft cloth. True amber may omit a faint resinous fragrance but copal may actual begin to soften and the surface become sticky. Amber will also become heavily charged with static electricity and will easily pick up small pieces of loose paper. Please look up the others, i would hate to hear someone be discouraged about using the amber simply because someone sold them fake amber.

I just ordered the bracelet/anklet for my son. Do you know anyone that has tried that? I am nervous about a necklace and he is 5 months old, kind of chubby so I am not even sure how that would work! 🙂 In the last few days he has become weepy, fever, poops and constantly putting things in his mouth.. we are assuming its teething! Poor boy!

Aw!! It’s so hard at that age when all you can do is guess! It does sound like teething though.

I haven’t tried the anklet – only the necklace. If you get the right size for him it should not be big enough to snag on anything (or chew on), or small enough to be uncomfortable.

I will say though – that I’m not sure if the necklace works as well on my second son as it did on my first (when I wrote this). For Levi, it was a dream!! Seriously made a huge difference, and we could clearly see the change before/after. WIth Judah, he still seems very miserable, so we’re not sure if it’s working or not! But I figure, it’s a “cheap” investment for something natural that can help.

Hope your little one feels better soon!!

I was sceptical at first but really noticed the teething symptoms return when i left the necklace off for a couple of days. The rosy cheeks, dribbling and wingeing from pain returned. i have not had to administer pain relief. i bought mine from flowerchild and happy with product and service. Hoping that you baby will be better soon !!!

I think each child will respond differently to cleaning. One of my daughters is very clean and the other isn’t. I have a special day of the week for cleaning the house and also (as a rule) my children know they can’t go out unless their room is clean. Consistency is the most difficult for me. But so far, I have raised 4 children to adulthood and all are very good with cleaning their homes.

Random question about these necklaces – how fast do baby’s necks grow?? I just bought a necklace for our “almost” 3 month old, hoping to be prepared for when teething starts. I must have measured wrong because it’s way too big. Trying to figure out if I should return it for a smaller size or if he will grow into it quickly. ALSO – in terms of safety – how big is too big for them?? Thanks, I really hope to hear back from you as I don’t know who else to ask 🙂

Yes, I would return it for a smaller size. Their necks stay really little for a long time and you don’t want the necklace to be so large that it can catch on things. You can probably hold off on putting in on until around 4 months. 4 months is an early teether, but not too early. I haven’t heard of babies teething before that though.

Good luck, hope it helps you guys! We found it helped a ton with our first, our second it wasn’t as noticeable.

I have tried it myself! Nothing worked for my baby before I bought a Baltic Amber necklace and he became so calm and relaxed. He would sleep tightly at night and would run around without saying that he has an ache.. Highly recommend to try it!
