My husband was a great sport to take this photo for me.
You know why? Because he supports me. And because he supports my desire to encourage other women in something that’s so, so good.
Let’s not worry so much about “breast is best”. It’s a tired cliche. There’s not much debate out there about the merit of this like-no-other super food.
What I want to see changed is the fear and insecurity surrounding breastfeeding that some women feel. And the fact that not everyone sees it as “normal”.
Because, come on, what could be more normal?
I’m well aware that some women cannot breastfeed, or simply choose not to. This is not meant to be a smug little commentary to them. By no means.
What this is is a celebration of just how normal and wonderful and amazing mama-milk is.
How creative and clever is God?
And how lucky are we?
Dear friends, I’m joining with mamas all over the world to celebrate and wish you a happy World Breastfeeding Week. May you feel free to breastfeed in public or in private or wherever you may be when your little one gets hungry or needs comfort. And–as you’re able–may you do your part in making breastfeeding a big deal… so that it can be normal again.

6 August 2012 at 7:40 amI love this message and what you did with your header. I think having your name more prominent and keeping the mommyhood memos piece is a great compromise. This way you won’t have to worry about the technical part and about losing followers, changing facebook fan page names, etc. Awesome. Yay for you!

6 August 2012 at 9:01 amthanks jessica. i don’t *love* the header… but it’s the best i can do considering i have no graphic design skills! ha! 🙂 and yeah, i will eventually change everything all the way over to just my name, but for now this is a good compromise/transition phase. or something like that – haha! i’m not a huge fan of having my photo on the header, but didn’t know what else to put there so it wouldn’t be too boring. maybe i’ll get used to it… maybe i’ll take it down. who knows! 😉

7 August 2012 at 1:18 amSupport is HUGE and I felt like I had zip support with breast feeding my firstborn, especially the doc that encouraged me to start supplementing by 6 wks. Aargh. I changed my own perspective and knowledge come babies 2, 3, and. 4. Night and day difference!

7 August 2012 at 8:07 pmgosh, yes. education and support is everything. and women need to see other women being “normal” and comfortable about it all as well! so glad you took it on yourself to get more understanding.

7 August 2012 at 4:12 am{Kathy} My husband is a pediatrician. We have 4 children all of whom breastfed for a total of 10 years of nursing. I am very thankful for those experiences. I love the picture. You look so strong, yet so feminine. Congratulations!
