A lot of Sydney’s restrictions eased today. I’ A lot of Sydney’s restrictions eased today. I’m not keen on calling it “freedom day” because I think it’s insulting to nations and peoples who actually don’t have the kind of freedom I’ve often taken for granted. But I will say I really enjoyed my first outing—browsing a thrift store for no particular reason and then going to Ikea to replace all the breakfast bowls we’ve managed to accidentally break recently. Regular stuff—regular stuff that I’ve *missed.*

Feels great to be able to invite people around our table again this week, and I’m looking forward to my first swim in the ocean one day soon. The kids return to in-person school in two weeks, our state is careening toward 80% double jabbed, libraries are opening again, we get to see mum and dad Booker in a couple of days—it’s all happening. I’m grateful.

And gee, Salvos, I missed you. Thanks for the minion outfit we didn’t need but bought anyway. You added some giggles into an already-happy week. Best $2 spent all year. 😍😂

Also: It’s 12:20am and I’m up way too late… but the neighbors are blasting Cher’s greatest hits so I guess we each have our own way of celebrating. (I’m gonna give ‘em a free pass this time. 🥂)

I haven’t read it yet but you better believe I’m going to. Congratulations on your launch day, @aahales. I can get behind a message that says the world needs less hustle and hurry. Glory, hallelujah, and everybody said AMEN while exhaling a whopping sigh of relief. #aspaciouslife #ivpress @ivpress
He casually drops words like “sabotage” or “ He casually drops words like “sabotage” or “obviously” into conversation. He’s obsessed with Spider-Man and has already tabled Black Panther as his next birthday theme 51 weeks from now. He loves bubble baths and performing and having all eyes on him. He’s positive and enthusiastic and can make a friend of *anyone*. We’re grateful for every single bit of his five years with us. Happy birthday Micah Ezekiel. You are an absolute treasure. 💛🤟
On being human // I had just arrived in Australia On being human //

I had just arrived in Australia the week before. My roommate woke me up to tell me what happened but it didn’t really register until I went to the common room to find a TV and see for myself. So much changed that day, most of which was (and still is) terrible. But twenty years on I can still so clearly remember how strangers softened when they heard my accent. How a shop keeper or bus driver would pause to ask me if I was okay or if I lost anyone. As an American abroad I had never (and have never since) been treated so tenderly by strangers as in those terrible, shocking days. It's like my accent itself reminded people of my humanity—of our humanity. I can remember what it feels like to walk in that collective mourning marked by humility—one that the whole world seemed to share for a moment. We will not forget the horror. May we also not forget the humility and the empathy. May we not forget what it feels like to walk together and remember that we are human.

Also: May we not forget those who’s accent (or ethnicity or religion) caused them to be treated much more harshly or suspiciously or arrogantly from that day forward as well. We certainly did not all experience the tenderness I so fondly remember.

May we never forget what it means to see each other’s humanity.
