Baby K’tan: a smart alternative to the Moby wrap (review & giveaway)

baby k'tan review

A while back when I did the Babywearing Series I started to hear a buzz about the Baby K’Tan wraps… but had never seen or tried one for myself. Much to my delight, Tiny Little Elefants emailed me that same week asking if I’d be willing to test and review one.

It must have been fate. (hee!)

I generally say no to product offers and reviews, but this was one I couldn’t pass up – it was a perfect fit for us and for the Memos. Plus, I knew it also meant a fun giveaway for my readers. Bonus.

Tiny Little Elefants graciously answered all of my bazillion questions before I finally settled on the Baby K-Tan Breeze (which I received straight away).

baby k'tan product package

By that time, Judah was already seven months old and I had fully transitioned over from my Moby to the Ergo. To be honest, it was very hard for me to let go of the Ergo (which I use daily) and pick up a new carrier. I’m just too familiar with it and comfortable in it.

Nevertheless, I was very grateful to try the Baby K’Tan, and I waited to write my review until I had worn it in different settings and circumstances.

Here’s what I like about the Baby K’Tan:

  • It has all the comfort of a moby-like wrap without the long material to get tangled in (or get dirty on the ground).
  • It’s small, lightweight, and compact – so perfect for traveling or storing in your purse.
  • The fabric is cozy and soft.
  • It feels sturdy and secure once you get the hang of how to put it on.
  • There are several ways to wear it for newborns, older babies, twins, breastfeeding, and hip carry.
  • It works from newborn right through to toddler age. (Note: I did not try Levi in this wrap. Although I do carry him on my back in the Ergo, I can’t actually imagine carrying him on my hip for any period of time. At two-and-a-half he’s just too big to be worn anywhere but my back.)
  • The sizing was easy to figure out. (Just order you t-shirt size.)
  • I chose the Breeze which is half mesh fabric – should be perfect for our summers here in the tropics. By the time I got it the height of summer had already passed, but we’ve had enough hot days since that I can confidently say the K’Tan is far more pleasant to wear than the Moby when the temperature rises.

Here’s what I don’t like about Baby K’Tan:

  • It’s not a one-size-fits-all so my husband can’t use it.
  • You can’t wear baby on your back.
  • I didn’t feel like it was as secure (as my Ergo) for my strong, active older baby. (Perhaps this would change with time as I/we get more comfortable in it, though I’m not sure.)
  • The one I was given is white, which easily shows dirt and mess.

baby k'tan review and giveaway

Overall, I really, really like the Baby K’Tan.

The Moby was my go-to wrap for both of my boys when they were newborns, but I can see how the K’Tan will easily replace it as my favorite since it is smaller, less bulky, more breathable, and you don’t have to wrap it around and around. (Generally just less complicated and tedious!) For older babies and toddlers I still prefer my Ergo.

Tiny Little Elefants has agreed to give a Baby K’Tan to one of my readers.

p.s. Tiny Little Elefants provided me with a wrap for review but all opinions stated are my own.

I appreciate the review – I am currently pregnant with my second child and have an ergo… but as you said I would love something that would work better for a smaller baby… this sounds like the perfect solution!

I am always on the lookout for more baby carriers! While I have no kids of my own, I do have 13 children that I am currently taking care of (we work at a refugee centre) and baby wraps are a life safer! I hadn’t heard of baby K’tan, but it looks great! LOVE that its compact, for travelling! Thanks for being honest about the pros and cons. Lightweight is perfect for our weather here too!

I’m glad I ran in to this review. Currently I’m looking for new ways to manage/travel with both my little ones while out on my own and the Baby k’tan sounds like it would work well with my newborn. My 2.5 year old would never let me put her in slings or any other carrier like this she’s been very independent and wanting to be free to move since the day she was born. I’m kind of glad my new little one loves being swaddled and cuddled close. 🙂

Awesome to know! I have been planning to buy a moby wrap but have been hesitant because all of the wrapping and extra material just looked uncomfortable. Thanks for the info!

I would love to win this! I wear my seven-week old everywhere in the Moby but it’s 98 degrees here today, plus humidity, so I would love a lighter option. 🙂

Thanks for posting this! The baby K-Tan wrap sounds great! I’m also considering trying out the moby wrap but am concerned about how hot all that fabric would be for our summer baby!

Hi Adriel, thanks for your review! i’m on the look-out for a new carrier as mine super sucks!! I have an Evenflow Snugli and it’s so horrible, so many snaps and buckles, it’s really a 2 person job getting that thing on…then trying to get the baby in there; so difficult. This one seems a lot easier and with a little one time is of the essence!

This video on Youtube has me convinced that the K’tan is the way to go over the Moby wrap: http://youtu.be/1ThAv6JeVmA

I am really counting on a lot of use for this wrap when our baby boy arrives in October!

Hi Adriel, love your blog! I’m a Sydney mummy but I live at an outdoor rec kids camp (teen ranch Australia) so baby carriers are life savers! Love our ergo for older babies and the sleepy wrap for our 2 month old Jemimah but baby k’tan sounds great!

Would sooo love to try out this carrier, I would be a baby wearing Mommy but instead I hold my sweet girl nonstop and have worn my back and shoulders beyond repair, literally,I have tendonitis in my left shoulder and my hip and back will not stay aligned! If only we could afford a baby carrier, and this 1 looks great! Enjoyed your review!

Thanks for the review Adriel. It’s great to hear about a lighter weight alternative to the Moby. We are currently are caring for a preemie baby at our foster home in Asia and don’t have a carrier that is light weight enough for our 40 degree C summers but supportive enough for his floppy wee body. This looks like it could be a goer! Love your blog & perspectives on parenting.

We are moving to Indonesia in about 4 weeks, and the k’tan looks really good for the hot weather and for our next little bubba (coming soon…) x

Did you know the K’Tan was derived by a mom that wanted a better way of wearing her Down syndrome son? She tried to make the best of both worlds between the Moby and a sling. I love that story. I have a K’Tan & L.O.V.E. it! I was seeking a Moby alternative and found it at our local Nappy Shoppe. My son has Down syndrome & at the time I was trying the K’Tan on I was unaware of the history of the K’Tan. When I got home I found this article. God lead me to the K’tan. I am sooo grateful!
